Most colon cancers arise from benign (termed adenomatous by pathologists) polyps. The detection and removal of these polyps can prevent colon cancer from developing. Regular screening is recommended for people over 40 with a family history of colon cancer, and for all people over the age of 50.

Unfortunately, most patients do not follow their physician's advice to undergo such a procedure. This is due to a variety of reasons including the risk, discomfort and expense associated with conventional colonoscopy techniques.

Virtual (CT) Colonography is a new, fast and reliable CT test, which can examine the colon for polyps and cancer. This test is painless, does not require IV sedation and is less expensive than conventional colonoscopy. Virtual CT colonography is comparable to conventional colonoscopy for the detection of most polyps; in fact this examination can detect polyps as small as 5 mm. Colon cancer is quite rare in polyps less than 1 cm. in size.

Patients should consider Virtual (CT) Colonography if they are over 50 years of age, are at high risk for colon cancer, or have not been able to undergo or complete a conventional colonoscopy

  • They are over 50 years of age
  • Are at high risk for colon cancer
  • Have not been able to undergo or complete conventional colonoscopy
